Family and Consumer Sciences Programs Teach Families to Improve
Their Lives
- The Family Nutrition Education Program resulted in 63 enrolled with a
98% completion. Over 6,000 people were reached through awareness programs
and exhibits.
- A 10-hour diabetes program was taught with a participation of 48.
Results showed that 86% learned at least 3 pieces of information that would
help them deal with diabetes. One woman commented that she would start
taking her diabetes more seriously.
- To educate families in planning and preparing more nutritious meals
classes were taught in: substitutions in meal planning, calcium, food
safety, alternative sweeteners, foods low in fat, and getting more from your
crock pot.
- There are currently 10 EH clubs in the county with an enrollment of 120.
Monthly leadership lessons were taught on saving money at the pharmacy;
cooking low fat; families - youth and gambling; family rituals and
traditions; preserving and storing antique fabrics; gardening; diabetes; and
charitable giving.
- The Extension Homemakers, 4-H parents, and others knitted or crocheted
385 items for the Arkansas Children’s Hospital. This was a total of 3,622
volunteer hours for a total value of $50,708.

School enrichment programs teach life skills, nutrition,
clothing and self-esteem.

- Monthly quilting classes taught on color selection, binding and shortcut
methods.
- Leadership, parliamentary procedure training is included in classes.
- 48 learned 3 facts on diabetes on how to manage it and eat healthy.
