Rice Verification Field Ties for Highest Yield in the State

Cooperator Dustin Tackett was pleased with his yield of 199 bushels of rice.

The field of Rice Tech XP 723 tied for the highest grain yield in the state. Hampered by late rain and late emergence, the field ended up with only 8 plants per square foot - proving that high yielding varieties can overcome huge obstacles.

Dustin experienced high input cost. Even though fertilizer, water, and weed control were below average, the fuel, hauling, and seed costs cut into any profits.

In the final analysis, milling yields made the big difference in breaking even.

Impacts

  • The yield was 199 bushels per acre, which was more than 50 bushels over the county average.

  • High yielding varieties pay big dividends when input cost is high.
