Pope County cattle producers save time and money using stockpile grazing.
Cattle producers Matt Hoien and Larry Johnston, manager of the Gerald Johnston Ranch, managed a field of stockpiled Bermuda grass. 500 head of cattle grazed 170 acres for 43 days. The actual cost of growing the forage was $7.20 per animal unit for the grazing period. The actual savings was $8.12 per animal unit.
Lewis Weir managed a field of stockpiled fescue. 28 head of cattle grazed for 45 days on 18 acres. The estimated forage utilization was 78% based on animal forage intake requirements and forage yield estimates. Actual cost to grow the forage was $12.89 per animal unit with an actual savings of 9.89 per animal unit.
