County Impact Statements - Polk County
Family Expo Conducted in Polk County
In an effort to promote Extension Family and Consumer Science programs to a
new audience, the County Extension Council FCS Committee and the FCS Agent
developed plans for a countywide Family Expo in August. The Committee included
representatives from parenting, child care, health care and child welfare
service programs throughout the County. Together, Extension and these other
organizations reached 166 people at Rich Mountain Community College. Exhibits
and classes on family related topics as well as games for the kids were offered.
The Family Expo consisted of exhibits and classes on family related topics
and educational games for the kids. Volunteers manned exhibits on Foods &
Nutrition, conducted games for kids to teach the Food Guide Pyramid concept, and
taught Fathering classes for men. The Mena 4-H Club conducted the Character
Critters Puppet Show to forty-two children. This program emphasized the
importance of good character. The puppets were made by Extension Homemaker Club
members. Rotary Club of Polk County - Mena were on hand educating people about
the value of organ donation. As a result, 52 people became organ donors. Members
of the Polk County Sheriff’s Department fingerprinted children for emergency
identification. Professionals taught classes in breast care, diabetes prevention
and care, water safety, smoking cessation and dental hygiene. Health care
volunteers conducted bone scans for osteoporosis, blood pressure checks for
hypertension, blood sugar tests, and checks to determine the correct
installation of child safety seats.
This program did an excellent job of providing needed services to the
community. It helped make people aware of services offered by all the
organizations involved.
