Extension Homemakers Make a Difference

Polk County Extension Homemakers have been very busy this year. They learn about various topics at their monthly club meetings, but they also donate a lot of time helping their communities. They make quilts for burn-out victims, turbans for cancer patients, and anything else that will help those in need.

One of their projects this year was sponsoring "Demonstration Days" to teach skills that might otherwise be forgotten. They have conducted workshops on lace shaping, rock painting, bread making, and various other craft projects.

It’s not all work though, this year they conducted a "Stress Relief Retreat." This overnight retreat involved 9 hours of instruction in how to relieve stress in the modern woman’s life. All of the classes had a "fun" element as well as being educational. They included music, exercise, eating correctly, art, joy, enjoying nature, fighting depression, and women helping women. It was such a hit that they are planning on having another one next year.

There are 7 Extension Homemakers Clubs in Polk County. Back Country, Homestead, Ink, Mena and Wilhelmina E H Clubs cover Mena and North Polk County areas; Happiness EH Club covers the Hatfield, Cove and Vandervoort areas; and Wickes EH Club covers the Wickes, Hatton and Grannis area.

"The past year has been very productive and successful and I believe Jane Thacker deserves a note of gratitude and recognition for a job well done as our County Extension Agent - Family and Consumer Sciences." – Sally Clark, EHC President
