4-H Summer Programs Fun and Learning Come Together!
In addition to the traditional 4-H program conducted in Pike County, special
interest programs are conducted as day camps each summer. A committee of youth
select topics to be addressed in the day camp programs each year. This insures
that the programs are of interest to youth.
Topics this year were foods and nutrition, cooking, camping, wildlife &
environment, fishing derby, and project fun day. At the Kids Cooking School,
youth learned about foods and the Food Guide Pyramid, kitchen IQ, how to measure
and read recipes correctly, and basic cooking skills. The 4-H Fishing Derby -
Hooked on Fishing, Not on Drugs - was a big success. Summer Fun Camp was a day
camp and an overnight experience at the Crater of Diamonds State Park. We took
advantage of the Traveling Education Nature Trailer and had great mini-programs
on Arkansas Mammals, Native Americans, Dutch oven cooking, owls and more.
Project Fun Days were held for youth leaders to conduct short presentations on
topics in the project area. Other youth learned about different project areas
and had lots of fun.
A Children’s Health Fair was conducted by Pike County 4-H and the
Murfreesboro Trailblazers 4-H Club. Hearing, eye, blood pressure, and diabetes
screenings were available at no charge.
