Extension Programs Support A Healthy Way of Life
Concerns about health related issues has remained high in our county.
Americans pay a little over $500 billion annually in medical expenses and lost
productivity due to four of the leading causes of death that are health-related.
U.S.D.A.’s Economic Research Service estimates that improved health patterns
could save Americans $43 billion in medical care costs and lost productivity
from disability associated with coronary heart disease, cancer, stroke and
diabetes in the United States each year, and prevent over 119,000 premature
deaths among individuals 55-74 years of age, valued at $28 billion per year.
Several programs were conducted throughout the year to raise awareness of health
concerns and try to educate more citizens about health-related issues.
A county-wide health fair was organized with approximately 106 participants.
Several medical professionals provided free screenings, testing and safety or
health realated information to participants.
"I always enjoy the health fair and take advantage of the tests offered,
because I otherwise would not have them done." - 2001 Perry County Health Fair

"I learned to watch labels closer when shopping. I discovered some new
recipes I want to use. The program was very good and helpful." - 2001 Diabetics
