County Impact Statements - Perry County
Youth Excel with Livestock Projects

Thirteen year-old Brandon Robertson did not know much about livestock seven years ago when he joined 4-H. But, that’s not true today! Brandon recently received the Purple Circle award for his Grand Champion Charolais bull at the Arkansas State Fair. This is just one of several successes among 4-H young in Perry County.

Livestock and poultry projects are among the most popular for 4-H members. The youth take their projects seriously, working daily with their animals to bring them up to show quality. They are also eager to learn - attending livestock production meetings and workshops, grooming and showing clinics, and judging clinics and competitions. Over thirty 4-H youth showed animals at the Perry County Fair. In addition, many 4-H’ers attended several shows across the state including the 2001 Arkansas State Fair.

Perry County had over 40 youth involved in the 2001 Poultry Chain. This included Kim Nutt from the St. Boniface 4-H Club, whose pen of pullets went on to be the Grand Champion Pen at the Arkansas State Fair. She also received the prestigious Purple Circle award.

In addition to livestock skills, 4-H members also learn life skills through livestock projects including responsibility, work ethics, communication skills, and leadership skills.

"The quantity and quality of the youth livestock exhibits at the Perry County Fair is the greatest it has ever been." - Robert Vandivere, Former Perry County Extension Agent
