Newton County Horticulture Education Encouraging Profitability and Sustainability

Picture of a garden and garden sheds.

Newton County gardeners can produce over $2,000 of fruits and vegetables in home garden plots.

Horticulture provides both income and fresh food for home consumption for growers in Newton County. From the home gardener to the truck patch producer; all have a need and desire for horticulture education.

One of the ways that county growers stay informed is through the Newton County Horticulture Newsletters. Last year, 155 individuals were kept up to date on issues of interest to Newton County vegetable and ornamental horticultural enthusiasts through these newsletters. The Newton County Cooperative Extension Service also conducts educational radio programs for KHOZ radio station. Last year, 12 programs were presented on horticulture topics. Four newspaper articles were also published addressing county horticulture issues.

Fruit and vegetable production for home consumption is an important issue faced by Newton County residents. To address this issue, Jack Boles, county Extension agent - staff chair conducted a February gardening workshop, "Planning Your Vegetable Garden," for 16 individuals and a June garden workshop, "Mid-Season Vegetable Garden Management," for seven individuals.

Impacts

  • One-hundred fifty-five county residents received timely issues of the Newton County Horticulture Newsletter.

  • Forty-four county producers received timely issues of the Newton County Organic/Sustainable Agriculture Newsletter.

  • Twenty-three landowners participated in two county gardening workshops, addressing vegetable and fruit production for home consumption.

  • Seven Newton County producers became members of the Newton County Farmers' Market.
