Improving Cattle Operations in Newton County

Picture of cows grazing in a field.

Newton County cow/calf operations are becoming more profitable due to educational opportunities.

Beef and forage production currently ranks as the top agricultural enterprise in Newton County. A recent agricultural census showed Newton County with 21,572 cattle on 613 farms. Because of this, the Newton County Extension Council recommended beef and forage education for cattlemen to keep them up to date on current beef and forage production issues.

One of the best ways that county beef producers stay informed is through the Newton County Beef and Forages Newsletter. Last year, 167 county beef producers kept up to date on the latest beef and forage issues by receiving four issues of this newsletter on a quarterly basis. Last year, 19 radio programs were broadcast through area radio and television stations on beef- and forage-related topics.

Beef and forages were also the topics at educational meetings conducted in Newton County in 2007. One hundred forty-eight producers participated in eight meetings dealing with such subjects as “Nutrient Management for Tall Fescue Production” to “ Beef Replacement Heifer Selection."

In an effort to educate forage producers on appropriate weed control practices, two weed control demonstrations were conducted in Newton County during 2007. Fifty-two Newton County forage producers were also certified to purchase restricted-use pesticides during this time.
