4-H Program Making the Best Better - Newton County Youth Leadership Program

Picture of a group of youth attending leadership meeting.

Leadership skills such as communication and decision- making were developed through the Newton County Youth Leadership program.

The 4-H motto is "To make the best better." That is certainly what took place with Newton County young people involved in the Newton County Youth Leadership program. Twenty-five youth and three adults participated in five sessions of the program over the 2006/07 school year.

Each school district in the county selected eight to nine sophomores with the potential to become leaders. Then, once a month, these young people were brought to a central location in Jasper to participate in leadership development sessions. These sessions included personality identification, communication, resource management, a county government tour, and banquet etiquette.

The 25 young people completed the program by participation in the ExCel Ropes Course and Leadership Program at the Arkansas 4-H Center outside of Little Rock, AR.

Through this program, these 25 young people were empowered to take on the leadership roles that await them as they advance through high school, college and life. They all have expanded their perception of who they are and who is considered their neighbor.

The local pool of potential county and organizational board members, governmental officials, and organizational officers for Newton County has been expanded by 25, thanks to the Newton County 4-H Leadership Program.
