Monroe County
Agriculture Program
Rice Production
Rice has been the main "money crop" in Monroe County for many
years. In 2007, 46,500 acres were planted in Monroe County, down
from the high of 60,500 acres planted in 1999 and the 48,000 acres
planted in 2006. This was due in large part to the increase in corn
acreage in 2007.
As a state, Arkansas leads the way in production of rice. The
University of Arkansas is also one of the key entities in the world
for rice research and has produced some of the most commonly planted
rice varieties including the Wells variety, named after B.R. Wells,
former U of A Professor and one of the most respected names in rice
research around the world.
Below, you will find links to websites and publications, from the
University of Arkansas Cooperative Extension Service, that provide
recommendations and other helpful information for growing rice in
Arkansas.
