The Food Stamp Nutrition Education Program is Making a
Difference Learning the 3 F's - Food, Fun, and Food Stamps
Mississippi County has a high number of people who receives food stamps.
Every school but one qualifies for the FSNEP grant program.
The Food, Fun, and Reading program was presented to nine second grade classes
to help them learn about food and nutrition. Storybooks with food-related themes
were read to them and then students were asked to participate in hands-on
nutrition activities.
Two schools in two towns in the county were involved. One-hundred and
sixty-nine students were involved in the program.
Students will be able to make better selections for snacks and understand the
importance of eating and selecting foods from the the food guide pyramid.
Impact
This is the first year for the program to be conducted in the county. The
schools that participated in the program did feel that the program did provide
useful information to the students.
