County Impact Statements - Mississippi County
Expanded Food & Nutrition Education Program (EFNEP)
Mississippi County has a high population of limited resource families in need
of nutrition education. The Expanded Food and Nutrition Education Program (EFNEP)
has the means to help improve the health and lives of these families.
The county was able to hire two Program Assistants (PAs) to deliver the EFNEP
nutrition education plan to qualifying families. The county was divided
according to population allowing each PA equal contact possibilities.
The EFNEP program has made a difference in lives throughout the county; for
example, one vegetarian client learned the importance of adding more protein
foods to her diet, because of her pregnancy. Another client did not eat many
vegetables. Before graduation, she started adding vegetables to her family's
meals; her family especially liked the Broccoli/Cauliflower Salad. An eight year
old boy learned the importance handwashing during the Glow Germ demonstration;
his mother reported that he monitors the family's hand cleanliness during meal
preparation and consumption. A young mother finished the EFNEP program, started
a home day care, and uses the recipes and nutrition information she gained
during EFNEP classes at the Head Start Center.

Impacts
During the 2003 calendar year 236 clients enrolled in EFNEP classes, which
affects approximately 800 individual family members.
Two EFNEP Youth groups participated in nutrition education and food
preparation classes during the summer months.
At the present time 47 clients have completed the EFNEP classes. Our
follow-up shows that 80% plan family meals in advance, 70% use less salt, 60%
shop with a grocery list, and 70% use food safety practices.
