County Impact Statements - Marion County
Today’s Youth Leaders Learn Skills They Can Use Today and Tomorrow
Tomorrow’s leaders are being trained today. Marion County will have a supply
of reliable, responsible leaders for the future. The Marion County Youth
Leadership Advisory Board, made up of school counselors, school administration,
Extension Personnel, and business and community leaders planned and conducted a
leadership training program for ninth grade students to provide them with
opportunities to learn and practice skills that will prepare them for these
roles.
Students were selected from each of the three county schools were from
Yellville-Summit : John Cortez, Katie Bertottie, Terra Layton, Josh Brandow,
Gerric Fatheree, and Jo Jo Rinker; from Bruno-Pyatt: Amanda Hobbs, Andrew
Stroud, Valerie Settlemoir, Jeff Trogdon, Noah Chagnon, Mary Beth Patton and
Laura Bardsley; and from Flippin: Ashley Myers, Brookee Davis, Wendie
Choudary, Amy Herbst, Amanda Lee, and Ashley Stevens.
A trip to the State Capital during a legislative session gave the students an
opportunity to see state government in action. They met and talked with
Secretary of State, Sharon Priest, State Representative, "Red" Milligan talked
and State Senator, Gary Hunter.
Funds for conducting the youth leadership training program were provided by
South Shore Foundation, Entergy, Marion County Adult Leadership Team, Ark-Plas,
Animal Adventures, Hudson Foods, Sav-A-Lot, First Federal Bank, North Arkansas
Abstract , and others.

Impacts
- Nineteen ninth grader students learned skills in communication,
teamwork, and decision making.
- $4000 was donated by local businesses and organizations.
- Students improved grades.
- Students decreased number of school discipline actions.
- Students improved self-image.
- Students learned to work cooperatively with students from other schools.
- Students developed knowledge, skills and attitudes that will enable them
to become productive and contributing members of society.
