Child Care Providers Improve Skills to Provide "Best Care" for
Children
Who is taking care of our children? In Marion county, there are 810 children
under age five. Because of the high number of working mothers, many of these
children are in the care of other family members, neighbors, and various others.
Finding quality care is real problem for many parents. There are only nine
licensed child care centers and seven licensed family child care homes in Marion
county.
Licensed child care providers, in order to maintain their license, must
participate in ten hours of continuing education each year. The "Best Care’
curriculum, offered by the Cooperative Extension Service, is designed to deliver
classes that keep them up to date on subject matter and methods that help them
become more effective in providing quality child care.
In 2001, 32 Marion county child care providers participated in the "Best
Care" training classes. Classes were conducted providing information of topics
such as: Caring for Children with Special Needs, Recognizing and Dealing with
Attention Deficit/ Hyperactivity Disorder, Getting Parents Involved and
Communicating with Parents, Providing Safe Food for Children, and Building Good
Relationships with Children.
