Field Demonstrations Seeing Is Believing
Controlling brush and weeds in pastures is a problem many livestock and
forage producers must deal with each year in Marion County. The Marion County
Extension Council and its Agricultural Program Planning Committee have expressed
the need for information on how to best control these pests in their pastures
and hay fields.
In the field demonstrations established in the county, farmers can see how
herbicides can be effectively used as one of the tools to control weeds and
brush in pastures.
A demonstration was established in the year 2000 on Hwy 235 six miles from
Yellville. A herbicide mixture of Grazon P+D and Remedy was used. These two
herbicides mixed together plus a surfactant will give the best broad spectrum
control when a farmer has many different species of brush present in a field.
Excellent control was achieved of such species as thorny locust, buck brush,
oak, sumac, blackberries. Some re sprouting of a few species such as hickory,
greenbriar and persimmon was observed in 2001. They were spot sprayed in 2001.
This demonstration is readily visible from Hwy 235. Watch for signs posted on
the west side of the highway. You will see how excellent results can be achieved
with herbicides to control weeds and brush in pastures. The results will be much
less brushogging needed and much improved growth of improved pasture grasses.

Marion County producers learn best pest management practices
through field demonstrations.
