Family Nutrition Education Program - Helping Families First
Six percent of U.S. households are at risk of hunger. They have lower quality
diets or must resort to seeking emergency food because they cannot always
afford the food they need. Nearly twenty-two million people, including more
than 9.1 million children, live in these homes, USDA.
Nearly four percent of U.S. households experience hunger: They frequently skip
meals or eat too little, sometimes going without food for a whole day. Nine
million people, including more than 3.2 million children, live in these
homes. USDA.
The Family Nutrition education program mission is to share skills with
limited income families to get the most out of their food dollars.
The FNEP program began in Lonoke County in 1999. The program served over
1,000 residents through the local DHS, health departments, senior citizen
center, child care centers, and schools. This year the program enrolled 120
participants with a majority of them completing at least eight hours of
training.
Participants are taught how to stretch their food dollars, meal planning,
food safety, basic nutrition, how to develop a spending plan, and other resource
management skills. Information was included in commodity distribution, displays,
and in local papers.
