County Impact Statements - Lonoke County
IPM Programs have Impact on Lonoke County Cotton Production

Arkansas ranks 5th in cotton production nationally with about 1 million acres produced. Cotton is vital to the economy of the Arkansas Delta region, and the income produced from cotton is a backbone of the economy of much of the Delta.

Integrated Pest Management is very essential to the profitability of cotton producers in this area. Studies have shown that IPM community participants realize an estimated $20 per acre reduction in cost over other producers outside the community. L&P Pest Management Community was one of the very first IPM communities formed in Arkansas and is still having an impact.

The impact is reducing cost while sharing knowledge and strategies among University researchers, consultants, private scouts, basic manufactors representatives and the cotton producer. The producer learns what gives him the biggest bang for the buck.

Components of the program include a pesticide resistance monitoring program, Agdea egg test to determine species in the field, moth trapping, weekly newsletters and e-mails to keep everyone informed, and weekly meetings where the producer can get together with researchers, chemical representatives, extension agents, and consultants to discuss the changes in technologies, approaches and strategies involved in growing profitable

Impacts

  • Cotton producers participating in the L&P Pest Management Community realized an estimated $20 per acre in reduced cost while growing conventional cotton.

  • Lonoke Extension staff conducted 14 Integrated Pest Management Meetings in FY 2001

  • L&P Pest Management Community consist of over 17, 000 acres of cotton in the Lonoke, Pulaski, and Jefferson County area.
