Extension Research Verification Program Yielding Higher
Profitability
Row crop farmers are facing a bleak economic outlook that has been affecting
them for a couple of years, and from all indications, low commodity prices are
going to be problematic for another couple of years. Research verification
programs are designed to help cooperating producers maximize yield and control
costs by following Extension’s unbiased research-based recommendations.
Verification program cooperators agree to follow all of Extension’s
recommendations during the growing season and off-season. The entire process,
from pre-planting soil sampling to harvesting, is included in the program and
the cooperator receives advice on every aspect on producing a certain commodity.
In years prior to enrolling in the Corn Research Verification Program, Mr.
Davey Farabough had been averaging around a 130 bushel per acre yield on his
corn. By following all of Extension’s recommendations, he averaged 203 bushels
per acre on his 170 acre field enrolled in the program in 2001. On the remainder
of his acreage he averaged 195 bushels/acre by applying the same treatments to
those fields as he did on the verification field. With a 73 bushel per acre
increase in yield and a price of $2.00 per bushel for corn, the program allowed
for Mr. Farabough to add $146.00 in gross profits per acre for 2001.
"I have participated in the verification programs for all of the crops I grow
and the program has increased my yields, but I never dreamed of growing 200
bushel corn." - Davey Farabough, 2001 Corn Verification Cooperator

Lincoln County producer Davey Farabough saw increased yields in
2001 by participating in verification program.
