IPM - A Real Help to Local Producers

Cotton and rice growers in Lafayette County can rest a little easier when it comes to pest monitoring programs. The University of Arkansas Cooperative Extension IPM (Integrated Pest Management) program has been a real help to local producers, consultants and agribusiness suppliers in 2001.

Over 4000 acres of rice were scouted using Extension Service pest management recommendations from rice water weevil control to grass and weed control recommendations. Rice stinkbug control recommendations were made on 3500 acres (14 producers).

Over two-thirds of the county’s 5500 acres of cotton were scouted by private scouts who used the Extension bollworm/budworm and beet armyworm moth trapping program.

Rice variety disease screening plots on Spirit Lake Farm allowed producers to view twenty-two new varieties.

Impacts

• In FY2001, a smartweed control demonstration in rice using Aim provided producers with another control option for this hard-to-control weed.

• In FY2001, a foxtail control demonstration in a bermudagrass hay meadow farm on Ronnie Grigg’s farm was established to show effectiveness of Oasis for control of foxtail.

• In FY2001, a corn variety demonstration was established on Brent Brothers farm. Eighteen hybrids were evaluated for yield, lodging resistance and shuck cover.

• In FY2001 a pasture weed control demonstration was conducted on Linda Toland’s farm. Eight herbicide treatments were evaluated to determine broadleaf weed control in a bermudagrass pasture.

• In FY2001, to evaluate Group IV roundup ready varieties, an early-season variety demonstration was established on Ken Schnipper’s farm.
