County Impact Statements - Johnson County
Walk Across Arkansas program takes off in Johnson County Individuals increase physical activity to improve health

In Johnson County, the number of individuals with diabetes, heart disease and other lifestyle related health problems has increased. During the last year, an increasing number of individuals contacted the Extension office for information on healthy eating, food preparation, and lifestyle changes related to specific health conditions.

Obesity and physical inactivity are contributing factors to many of these health problems. To increase the physical activity of adults and youth, the Johnson County Extension office in conjunction with the Extension Homemakers launched the Walk Across Arkansas program, an eight week program to promote physical activity.

A committee made up of local community leaders, agencies and organizations was formed to develop plans for the Johnson County program. The program was publicized through news releases, radio programs and educational displays. Team packets were distributed and the kick-off for the program was scheduled.

At the kick-off, over 30 teams were registered with additional teams being formed. Team captains were recognized and took the first lap around the track, led by Clarksville Mayor Billy Helms and County Judge Mike Jacobs.

All seven Extension Homemaker clubs formed walking teams and presented the leader training lesson "Exercise and Be Healthy" at their club meetings.

Results of the program will be reported in 2004.
