"Over the past 12 years in 4-H, I have been provided a clean, safe environment in which to showcase my talents on all levels of 4-H, while developing stage presence, public speaking skills and improving self esteem. I have had the opportunity to travel nation-wide, learn about other cultures, share ideas with political leaders, and develop leadership skills, inspiring me to become an active member of my community." -Suzanne Smith, Jefferson County 4-H member.
The mission of the 4-H program in Jefferson County is to create supportive environments in which culturally diverse youth and adults can reach their fullest potential and to improve their quality of life. In support of this mission, the 4-H youth development program provides opportunities for youth to acquire knowledge, develop skills, form attitudes and practice behavior that will enable them to become self directing, productive and contributing members of society. Through 4-H, youth have the opportunity to:
- Practice effective problem solving and decision making skills.
- Develop a strong sense of community responsibility.
- Demonstrate communication and leadership skills.
- Feel the pride that comes with mastery.
- Be environmental stewards.
- Use research based knowledge gained from the Extension Service.
- Practice responsible health and nutrition behavior.
- Improve skills in resource management
We reach youth through Community 4-H Clubs, Project Clubs, School Enrichment, Camps, and Special Interest Activities.
