Master Clothing Volunteers: Teaching Skills to Last a Lifetime
People have different reasons for wanting to learn to sew. Perhaps the most
interesting reasons were given by three men attending classes in FY '03.
One was an actor who couldn't afford the medieval costumes that he needed, so
he decided to learn to make his own. A second man wanted to start his own
business in men's ties! A third simply wanted to learn to sew to honor his late
mother who had been an expert seamstress.
Jefferson County has one of the two remaining Master Clothing Volunteer
programs in the state. Volunteers trained by the University of Arkansas
Cooperative Extension Service answer questions and provide both beginner and
advanced sewing classes to county residents requesting assistance.
Thirty-one residents learned sewing skills in the past year and have gained
knowledge that will last them a life time.
The Jefferson County Master Clothing Volunteers gave 294 hours of service to
the program in FY '03 and made 543 educational contacts.
