Enhancing the Horticulture Program Through Service Projects

The "cream of the crop" best describes the Jefferson County Master Gardeners. By enhancing community pride with their beautification projects, they provide a valuable service to the county. In FY '03, both youth and adults gained skills and knowledge by participating in the following Master Gardener projects:

  • Delta Rivers Nature Center
  • Three (3) Demonstration Gardens
  • Demo #1 Herb and Flower Garden
  • SE District Fair Horticulture Exhibits
  • Adopt-A-Spot at 6th & Idaho Streets
  • Pine Bluff Convention Center Pecan Grove
  • Belair School Greenhouse
  • Three rose garden demos & 1 vegetable garden demo at ADCC
  • Landscaping projects at St. Joseph High School, 73rd Street, County Extension Office, University Drive, Lakeside Montessori School and Sam Taylor Elementary
  • Jefferson County Lawn & Garden Seminar & Show
  • Farmer's Market Vegetable Judging Contest
  • Small Fruit Demo at UAPB
  • Enchanted Land of Lights & Legends
  • CASA Women's Shelter

The above projects had the collaboration of the Jefferson County Extension Service, University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff, University of Arkansas at Fayetteville, Master Gardeners, local schools, Pine Bluff Clean & Beautiful Commission., city and county government and county residents.

Impacts

  • 1,266 families benefited from the harvest of vegetables.
  • Over 10 tons of vegetables valued at $27,186.49 were harvested.
  • 28 new Master Gardeners were trained.
  • Established 2 new rose gardens and 1 vegetable garden.
  • 1,048 youth were involved in the program.
  • 120 Master Gardeners were involved in 18 projects.
  • Over 400 participated in Lawn & Garden Show, with 45 exhibitors.
  • 4,938 volunteer hours were expended in the various projects.
