County Impact Statements - Izard County
Community Service At It's Best

In the year 2000 a need to start a program targeting the number of adults interested in ornamentals, gardening and general horticulture became a main interest of the Agriculture Planning Committee and Izard County Extension Council. This developed into the first year of the Master Gardener Program for Izard County. Participants first had to undergo a total of forty hours of training in areas of horticulture. After the completion of the training, they were given the title of "Master Gardener". In return, each individual agreed to volunteer forty hours of community service back to the county.

The Izard County Master Gardener program was designed to increase the availability of horticultural information and improve the quality of life with horticultural projects. Goals were implemented through the training and employment of local volunteers. Izard County Master Gardeners assist the county by volunteering many hours of community service through a wide variety of projects and activities.

Since the Master Gardener Program was started three years ago, the Izard County Master Gardeners have worked to improve their communities by establishing and maintaining demonstration gardens, assisting with the 4-H Gardening Projects, and assisting with the county and district fairs. The work and volunteer hours that has generated from the program has gained tremendous recognition. The locations of projects in areas such as City Hall and the Izard County Senior Citizen Center have helped make this program a success.
