County Impact Statements - Izard County
4-H and you! Working together to make the best better!

Izard County 4-H is an informal, practical, learn-by-dong educational program for boys and girls between the ages of 5-19 from all racial, cultural, economic and social backgrounds. 4-H is one of three educational programs of the Cooperative Extension Service, University of Arkansas involving youth and volunteer adult leaders working together to make the best better in their community. Izard County 4-Hers participate in several countywide projects and contests. Many 4-Hers go on to the district and state level as well. Some of the projects and contests include: the 4-H BB-Q contest, the Dairy Food contest, the Ross Photography contest, the 4-H Poultry Chain Project and the 4-H Gardening Project. The Izard County 4-H program has given many children of Izard County the confidence, self-esteem, hands on experience and leadership skills necessary to excel as young adults whether it might be family of career orientated.

The Poultry Chain Project is one of Izard County’s 4-H projects that earns tremendous community and 4-H involvement. Together 4-Hers and local business earn money every year that help fund the 4-H Foundation. Last year Izard county had twenty-six 4-Hers who participated in this program. Each 4-Her raised twenty-five birds and out of that twenty-five, each 4-Her brought back four of their best to be auctioned off at the Izard County Fair. Local business in the county would then bid and buy these birds at the auction. The money raised was then placed in the 4-H Foundation to sponsor the Poultry Chain Project for the next year. This year the Grand Champion Bird brought $200. Total sales from the auction brought in approximately $2,000. This project enables 4-Hers to learn about agriculture, responsibility, and dedication. Many 4-Hers who participated in this project go on to participate in the State Turkey & Broiler contest. The Grand Champion winner receives a four year college scholarship.
