ReShape Yourself Program Helps Improve Diets, Fitness Levels and
Overall Health
Five of the major causes of death in Arkansas are lifestyle-related chronic
diseases. The cost of treating and caring for people with the leading
diet-related illnesses (heart disease, cancer, stroke, and diabetes) is
estimated at $3.9 billion annually. Lifestyle factors, such as diets high in fat
and low in fruits and vegetables, lack of physical activity and smoking,
increase the risks of chronic diseases.
The fifteen week program, "ReShape Yourself" was conducted with 34 adults
wanting to improve fitness, overall health and lose weight. The program focuses
on following the recommendations of the Food Guide Pyramid, walking for exercise
and making lifestyle changes.
"Not only did I lose weight, I am more attentive to portion control and the
amount of fat I consume at each meal. I learned to drink more water and started
exercising more. I read my labels carefully and do more comparison shopping. I
also try each day and at every meal to consider the food pyramid. I also was
able to get off of insulin and now I only take medication. I feel better for the
weight loss and I am now able to wear some of my clothing that I couldn't and my
clothing fits better and looser." - ReShape Yourself Participant
"This program has been great for me. Now I read everything that we buy. My
blood pressure is lower and I plan to continue to watch what I eat. I will also
continue to walk at least two times a week. Through the program, I lost a dress
size!" - ReShape Yourself Participant

Blood pressure, cholesterol and blood sugar screenings are taken
to determine the effectiveness of the ReShape Yourself program.
