Howard County Extension Helps Improve Parenting Skills

The 1, 2, 3, 4 Parenting Program was conducted in the Dierks area. The program focused on improving parenting skills for parents of ages one to four. Participants learned positive discipline techniques, building self-esteem, time management skills and basic child development. 100 % of the participants said they felt more prepared to handle discipline problems with their children and they were more confident about their job as a parent.

"The parenting workshop has helped me to understand more about my two-year-old son. I now know what to expect at certain ages. It has also helped me to build a support system in the community with other parents who have children the same age as mine." - Howard County 1, 2, 3, 4 Parenting Participant

Pocket Pals newsletter series is being distributed through a pilot program at Nashville Primary School. The newsletter is designed for parents of kindergarten and first grade students. It focuses on basic parenting skills which address time management, positive discipline, nutrition education and building self-esteem. Over 300 parents are receiving the newsletter on a monthly basis.

"Since the newsletters have been distributed, several parents have made positive comments about the information. If we can help the parents do a better job, the positive results will be reflected in our students overall performance." - Shirley Wright, Nashville Primary Principal
