Students Learn Proper Hand Washing Techniques and Guidelines for Following the Food Guide Pyramid

Second Grade Students learn proper hand washing techniques.

After two cases of Hepatitis B were reported at Nashville Primary, school officials requested information on proper hand washing. Using the Glo-Germ lotion (which simulates germs) second and third grade students were taught proper hand washing techniques. The students then saw how well they did by looking at the germs still left on their hands under the black light. As a result of the training, no new cases of Hepatitis B were reported.

A similar program was taught to 50 fourth grade students at Mineral Springs. Most students were surprised at how many germs were left on their hands after washing them. They learned how important it is to use soap, warm water and scrub for twenty seconds. Singing the ABC song helps determine the amount of time needed to properly wash hands.

Using a favorite fairy tale, Little Red Riding Hood, students learned about choosing healthy foods following the Food Guide Pyramid. Little Red Riding Hood packs her basket with healthy, nutritious foods to take to Grandmother's house. Along the way, she meets the Big Bad Wolf who eats all of the "goodies" (cakes, cookies and sweets) and develops a tummy ache. As a result he is unable to get to Grandmother's house.

Students learned it's okay to eat a few sweets, but too many will make you sick. They also learned to identify foods in each level of the Pyramid and why they should choose healthy foods.
