4-H Prepares Youth for Today and in the Future
"Learning by doing" is the basis for all Cooperative Extension youth
development 4-H programs. 4-H teaches life skills that youth can use today and
in the future. Life skills include community service volunteering, leadership
development, teamwork, building self-esteem, making healthy lifestyle choices,
decision making, goal setting, conflict resolution, and nurturing relationships.
Clubs meet on a monthly basis to conduct club business. Activities are
scheduled throughout the month which focus on building self-esteem, learning a
new skill or community service.
Adult leaders assist club members by providing leadership, helping with
decision making or teaching youth a new skill.
Since the inception of 4-H early in the 20th century, youth participating in
out-of-school 4-H clubs have self-selected the "projects" or subject areas they
will pursue, through hands-on, learning by doing. Beginning in 1973, 4-H has
emphasized that along with the subject matter, youth should acquire "life
skills," highly transferable knowledge, skills and abilities, broadly useful or
useful throughout life. Youth in clubs generally enroll in more than one
"project" in the course of a year. Total 4-H project enrollment in the 2000
annual report was 159,318.

4-H'ers learn through hands-on activities.
