Youth Learn "To Make the Best Better" Through School Enrichment Programs

Hempstead County Extension reaches the majority of its youth contacts through its school enrichment programs. The educational programs are offered to every school district and cover a wide variety of topics.

4-H School Enrichment Programs offer the teachers an additional educational subject matter resource that will complement their classroom instruction. The programs vary in length and offer students the opportunity to participate in hands-on training.

In FY2001, the Hempstead County Extension Service conducted school enrichment programs for youth in these project areas: Financial Management for High School Students; Teen Pregnancy Prevention; Conflict Resolution; Poultry Embryology; Food Safety; Foods and Nutrition; Water Quality and Farm Safety.

4-H School Enrichment Programs allow youth to develop certain "life skills" they will use the remainder of their lives. Youth improve their decision making ability and self esteem for being able to do things for themselves. As the youth utilize their "life skills", they become more productive citizens.

School Enrichment Programs conducted by the Hempstead County Extension service reached 1,445 youth in the past year. While these youth are not enrolled as county 4-H members, they will remember their experiences as participants in a 4-H School Enrichment Program long after they graduate.
