County Impact Statements - Hempstead County
Choices: the Future Depends on You!

The youth of Hempstead County learned knowledge and skills during many Character Counts, Teen Pregnancy Prevention and Violence Prevention programs. A new issue that we are working in is with the pre-teen and teenage participants covering the health and safety risks involved with smoking and drinking. These programs were designed to help them understand the importance of making good choices, and work toward a positive lifestyle through age-appropriate materials for ages 5 through 19.

The Character Counts programs focus on traits such as trustworthiness, respect, responsibility, fairness, caring, citizenship, honesty, courage, ethical decision making and violence prevention. Teachers, ministers and other community leaders have related that they can see benefits through these programs. Each of the county schools have participated along with other youth programs.
