County Soybean Verification Field Demonstrates the Value of Drainage
Jeremy Coleman, Greene County farmer, knows how important drainage is to
produce top soybean yields.
In Greene County many producers have problems watering soybeans effectively
without damaging the crop due to lack of drainage. Many of these fields are
rotated with rice which drainage is not a problem.
A county soybean verification was conducted in 2000 and 2001 on the Jeremy
Coleman farm south of Paragould. This verification utilized Roundup varieties
but was unique due to being planted on wide beds. This allowed the producer to
furrow irrigate the field with minimum loss due to poor drainage.
The entire farm was planted by this technique in 2001, due to their success.
This farmer has experienced a great yield increase due to this production
practice.
Soybean yields have improved from 35 bushels to 45 bushels on their irrigated
fields. The soybean verification field yielded 49.5 bushels in 2000. The 2001
fields were harvested with yields ranging from 45 to 55 bushels. The county
field on the Coleman farm averaged 53 bushels.
This information has been provided to all local producers at soybean
production meetings, and this field was one of our stops at our county field
day.
