A family of four in Greene County requires $27, 468 per year for basic living expenses. This equates to a wage of $13.20 per hour. The median wage paid to Arkansas workers is $8.59 per hour. According to 1999 Census data 37.9% of households in Greene county earn less than $25,000 annually.

Many families accumulate substantial wealth through years of hard work and management.

Yet, some of these individuals neglect to plan for the orderly transfer of their estate to the next generation.

Debbie Still, county agent in Greene county, selected "Keeping It In the Family" after meeting with the Family & Consumer Science committee. The target audience was the general public with emphasis on the farmers.

"Keeping It In the Family" is an educational program designed to acquaint property owners with the fundamentals of estate planning and encourage them to plan for the preservation and transfer of their assets upon their death.

The program was conducted with two sessions consisting of property ownership, wills, probate, non-titled property, trusts, role of life insurance, estates tax planning, and charitable remainder trusts.

Impacts

  • 59 people completed the two sessions.

  • 37% attended are developing wills

  • 28% attended are developing trusts.

  • Comments were:

"It was on my level of income and net worth."
