4-H Livestock Program Shapes Lives of Youth in Greene County

Greene County 4-H is a very active and viable group in Greene County. I’m responsible for the 4-H livestock project club in Greene County and work closely with the leaders and youth in training, selection, nutrition, health, and showmanship. Thirty days have been allotted on my plan of work, but many more hours of work goes into these projects. Time spent assisting 4-H’ers at the 16 major shows in 2000 and 2001 is too many to imagine.

Three major livestock show clinics were conducted in 2000 with 278 youth and adults attending. I have found that urban youth want to get involved in the livestock club and show if they can find a place to house their project.

The Greene County community has been tremendous by providing encouragement and financial support for the youth over the years. The Greene County Fair Livestock Premium Sale has grown from $4,950 in 1993 to $13,873 in 2001. The Greene County Cattlemen’s Association has provided funds for a Greene County Bred Heifer show. They donate $650 to sponsor their show for the youth. One 4-H family organized and conducted a new show in 2001 for all of Northeast Arkansas here in Greene County. The Buffalo Island Spring Livestock Show has organized a Blue Ribbon Circle Club that I am the Chairman of the committee that is awarding $8500 to the Grand and Reserve Champion winners. These are just a few examples of the tremendous support that has developed from our 4-H livestock program.

I know we like to measure our success with the 300 plus animals we exhibited at 16 major shows or the thousands of dollars that our 4-H’ers won, but I like to measure it by the number of lives we have touched in some form or fashion.
