4-H Horse and Pony Project Group and 4-H Broiler Projects

Situation: 4-H Horse and Pony Project Group and Broiler Contest

The potential youth audience for Greene County is 6908. The target audience for these programs were youth between and including the ages of five to 19. The expected benefits of these programs were to strengthen and develop the following characteristics is leadership, responsibility, reliability and team work.

Program Description: The audience for these programs were rural youth. The grassroots efforts in development of these programs included forming a 4-H Horse and Pony Project Group back about six year ago. From this beginning the club has grown and participated in events from the county level to the regional level.

Stakeholder Satisfaction: 15 staff days were devoted to these programs. The target audience participated in these programs daily with feeding and taking care of their horse and broiler projects. The program qualities that appeal to the youth are the opportunities to participate in a project they enjoy and the opportunity to compete against other 4-H’ers with the same projects.

Accomplishments and Impacts: Youth participating in these programs were taught leadership skills, they how to work together as a team in competitions, they learned responsibility and they learned reliability. One Greene County 4-H’er’s Broiler Project was selected as the Grand Champion Pen of Broilers, during this program year. Other Greene County 4-H’ers placed at the Arkansas State Fair and the Buffalo Island Junior Livestock Show. One Greene County 4-H’er placed first in their class on the regional 4-H Horse Show level of competition. Other Greene County 4H’ers placed at competitions beginning at the county level progressing to the District level, then the State level, and on to the Regional level.

Impacts

  • One Greene County 4H’ers Broiler project was selected as the AR State Fair Grand Champion Pen of Broilers
     
  • 15 - 20 Greene County 4-H’ers participate in the Broiler project at Buffalo Island and at the AR State Fair each year
     
  • The Greene County Fair conducted its first broiler contest in 2001 with 5 participants
     
  • One Greene County 4H’er was awarded State 4-H Horseshow Queen
     
  • One Greene County 4-H’er won 1st place in their class at the 4-H Regional Horseshow
     
  • The 4-H livestock projects teach Greene County Youth many life skills including responsibility and leadership
