Extension Programs Assist Individuals in Making Changes in Preventative Health and Nutrition Choices

The top five causes of death to Grant County residents are heart disease, cancer, cerebrovascular disease, (stroke), accidents and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. The percentage of adults in Grant County who do not have health care is 17%. The Family Nutrition Education Program was conducted in this county. The goal of the program was to provide education on nutrition, food safety and resource management. Participants in the program learned about the Dietary Guidelines for Americans and the Food Guide Pyramid in planning their meals. Participants learned how to make healthier food choices which may help prevent or delay the development of diet-related chronic diseases.

A Health Fair was organized and conducted by the Grant County Extension office and the Grant County Health Department. All services were provided free to the public. These included: blood sugar, cholesterol, eye tests, hemoglobin, nutritional counseling and blood pressure.

A two day mobile mammogram screening was provided by St. Joseph’s Mercy Medical Clinic. "I have participated in the mobile mammogram screening for the past two years. I have a history of breast cancer in my family. I think it is very important to receive an annual screening. The mobile unit is very convenient, because I do not have to drive to a big city to get a mammogram." - Grant County Mobile Mammogram participant
