County Impact Statements - Grant County
Fire Ant Abatement is a Success in Grant County
Fire ants are a nuisance insect across the state as well as in Grant County.
The University of Arkansas Cooperative Extension Service has a very effective
program for minimizing fire ants.
In Grant County Abatement programs are ongoing at Pine Crest Subdivision,
Grant County Fairgrounds, Sheridan Little League, Sheridan Community Center,
Grapevine Cemetery and the courthouse lawn.
In 1998 fire ant populations were as high as 200 mounds per acre. At the
present time we have a population reduction nearing 100%. Although fire ants
will never be eradicated they will no longer pose a serious problem for citizens
using the park.
"At the Recreation Center there looked like there was no hope, the fire ant
problem was bad. But, the program works, we use it every year". - Dewayne
Childress, Sheridan Recreation Center
The recreation center has purchased their own hand spreader and treats
themselves.
"Using the two-step method has helped at the fairgrounds tremendously. The
last three years we have had no problem with fire ants". - Sherman Lites, Grant
County Fair Board Member

Sheridan Recreation Center’s Fire Ant Abatement Program is in
it’s fourth year.
