Women Gain Strength, Balance, & Flexibility in Extension Fitness Program

Starting in their mid-forties, women lose 1/4 to 1/3 of a pound of muscle per year and gain that much – or more – in fat. Approximately 10 million Americans have osteoporosis, 80% of whom are women. One in two women will experience an osteoporosis-related fracture.

The Garland County Strong Women program, based on years of research
conducted by scientists at the John Hancock Center for Physical Activity and Nutrition (part of the Friedman School of Nutrition Science and Policy at Tufts University), is designed to improve bone density, balance, and flexibility.

Eighty program participants met in one of three classes for sessions twice a week. At the conclusion of the eight-week program, participants wished to continue the sessions. Eight volunteer leaders were trained to instruct the program. Since then, these volunteers have led 30 sessions and contributed over 200 volunteer hours to the program. They are still leading sessions twice a week.
