Breeding Soundness Evaluation Clinic Saves Calf Crop for 2 Producers

Picture of producers working with cattle in barn.

A presentation at the Garland County Cattlemen's monthly meeting introduced the Breeding Soundness Evaluation Clinic for beef bulls. This program educated producers on the importance of testing their herd bulls yearly before breeding season. The Garland County Cooperative Extension Service, along with the Garland County Cattlemen's Association and the Garland County Farm Bureau, conducted a clinic at Milsap farms, testing 18 bulls. Bulls were weighed and evaluated for confirmation, structure, and body condition as well as semen tested.

Two producers found their bulls were not sound breeders; this discovery saved them from completely losing a calf crop. The $35 cost per bull is cheap insurance that your bull is capable of being a sound breeder.

This is the 4th year for the program and several producers have adapted BSE practices either individually or by participating in the clinic.

Impacts

  • CES, Garland County Cattlemen's Assn., and Farm Bureau worked together to educate producers on the importance of testing bulls for breeding soundness and to provide the BSE Clinic

  • 14 beef producers participated in the Breeding Soundness Evaluation Clinic, testing 18 bulls
