4-H Pullet Chain
4-H Youth Development
The younger 4-H members needed an inexpensive livestock project to
get started in their project work. The 4-H pullet chain would provide an
ideal opportunity for them to get started with a livestock project.
Also, many local citizens expressed a desire to purchase farm fresh eggs
or laying hens. The 4-H pullet chain would be an ideal way to provide
this service.
The 4-H pullet chain goal for Franklin County was set at 20 participants. It
will be a countywide program open to all 4-H youth. In the pullet chain program,
the 4-Her receives 25 pullet chicks and grows them to maturity. The 4-Her brings
a pen of four to the North Franklin County Fair in Ozark to be shown and sold.
The money received for the pullets is used to purchase the baby pullet chicks
the following year. The 21 remaining pullets will then belong to the 4-Her. Many
of them start their own small business of selling eggs or sell some of the
remaining pullets at private treaty. All 4-Hers in Franklin County are eligible
to participate.
The number of participants has grown steadily - 5 in 2001, 5 in 2002, 18 in
2003, and 27 in 2004. Young 4-Hers learn responsibility in raising and caring
for the pullets.

The eagerly awaited chicks are here!
