Participants discuss farm safety issues at February 2001 Meeting

During our County Council Agriculture Subcommittee meeting held in August of 2000, a need for farm safety education was addressed by members. Additionally, members expressed a need for information regarding various aspects of farm liability insurance.

A committee including local growers local growers, Arkansas Farm Bureau, U of A Extension Specialists, and county agents was convened in November of 2000 to further discuss the topic. As a result, an agenda was formulated which covered the grower’s needs. Topics included:

1) First Aid When Tragedy Strikes

2) Safe Transportation of Equipment on Highways

3) Worker’s Compensation Availability

4) Liability Insurance and It’s Merits

A February 2001 meeting addressing the subject was held with 82 participants. Ken Shea, a local implement dealer, stated, "That was the best and most needed meeting Extension has ever had here. Growers need more information like that!"

Though hugely successful, the meeting unearthed more needs local growers face. Plans are underway to continue the education effort based upon committee member’s desires and insights.

Impacts

  • 82 local growers received farm safety education information

  • 15 growers reported the information on liability insurance has helped increase awareness of farm safety measures.

  • 22 producers reported implementing new safety measures on their farm.
