About Us
Dallas County

Dallas County sits in the heart of timber country in south-central Arkansas. Fordyce is the county seat and is located in the southeast corner of the county. Of the 9210 residents of the county, 57% are white, 41% are black with the other 2% being a combination of races. The primary industry is timber and timber related products. The county comprises 427,180 acres with 386,700 of them being devoted to timber production. Private landowners hold about 113,000 of those acres.

Georgia Pacific built the first southern pine plywood plant in the United States in Fordyce and it is still in full production today, employing 400 people. Many other timber related businesses are located throughout the county.

Cattle is the second largest agricultural enterprise in the county, whereas tourism is the second largest revenue source for the county. Hunting is a major industry with thousands of hunters flocking to the county during the various seasons. Klappenbach Bakery in Fordyce is world renowned and has been featured in national magazines.

The Dallas County Cooperative Extension Service is one of the off-campus arms of the University of Arkansas Division of Agriculture. We offer information and educational programs in four major areas: agriculture, environmental and natural resources, leadership and community development, family and consumer science, and 4-H/youth development.
