Soybean Demonstrations Provide Producers with Yield Information Using Unique Planting Method

We have always used soybean variety demonstrations in Craighead County as part of the soybean educational program. We are using a unique planting method that originated on the western side of the County on heavier rice soils which allows soybean producers the ability to be able to establish a soybean stand with irrigation.

A co-worker has dubbed this method the "spread'em and bed'em" planting system. Clients use bulk distribution to broadcast the soybean seed and use a ridge-till cultivator or some other implement to cover the seed.

Field trials were established on a smaller scale by using a Yamaha Kodiak 4-wheeler and a cyclone lawn fertilizer distributor. Success rates for stand establishment are 100% using this particular application set-up.

Impacts

  • A County Field Tour was held with 55 producers and industry personnel attending.

  • Soybean variety plots provided producers with an opportunity to evaluate varieties in a side by side comparisons of growth habits and yield.

  • Unique planting method allows producers to eliminate up to 5 trips across the filed.

  • Stand establishment with this planting method is almost 100% due to the fact beans can be "watered up" by using irrigation where in the past this was impossible.
