Extension Programs Assist Families with Nutrition, Health and
Wellness
Five of the major causes of death in Arkansas are lifestyle-related chronic
diseases. The cost of treating and caring for people with the leading
diet-related illnesses (heart disease, cancer, stroke and diabetes) is estimated
at $3.9 billion yearly. Lifestyle factors, such as diets high in fat and low in
fruits and vegetables, lack of physical activity and smoking, increase the risks
of chronic disease.
Diabetics Day Out is a class designed to give diabetics and their family
members up-to-date information and recipes.
"The Diabetic Day Out class was more helpful to me than one I attended at a
medical facility." - A participant
"Learning to read food labels has helped with planning low sodium and fat
meals." - A participant
"The television program on calcium changed the way I include calcium in my
diet." - A viewer
"Money 2001 helped me to reduce my debt by $2,000 and to save $1,000." -
