County Impact Statements - Columbia County
Providing "The BEST CARE" For Our Children

In Arkansas 69% of the children under the age of 6 live with working parents. All of these children will need quality child care in order to reach their physical, social, emotional and intellectual potential. The BEST CARE is a training program for child care providers that is delivered in a four county cluster, Columbia, Lafayette,

Nevada , and Hempstead County. These classes fulfill the state requirement that licensed child care providers must receive ten hours of instruction each year. The Best Care 2001 offered instruction in Marketing your Program I and II, How to get parents involved, communicating effectively with parents, Safe food for young children, Children with special needs, Building a good relationship with children, Mistaken behavior, Attention Deficit /Hyperactivity Disorder.

Evaluation revealed that childcare providers could identify internal temperature and visual appearance of food cooked to doneness. Participants in the class noted that food storage charts were a big help when buying quantity foods.

The lack of quality childcare impacts the larger societal issues of education, employment economics and environment. Caring for America’s children is everyone’s business.
