Introducing Cleveland County Youth to New Educational Opportunities
Available Through 4-H
As the world progresses, it becomes more difficult to attract and hold the
attention of young people who live in today’s technology-driven society. The 4-H
program has implemented new ideas and curriculum to encourage youth to
experience other real-life situations in a more hands-on environment.
Four Cleveland County youth and two adults participated in the Arkansas State
Grasslands Evaluation contest held in Clinton, Arkansas on May 5, 2001.
Preparation for the contest included learning in-depth information on: beef
forage management, forage and weed identification, fertilizer needs and
recommendations, topographic map reading, and how to enhance wildlife habitat.
This contest and program is great for teaching my son about the cattle
business and how to manage a cattle farm. He learned things that even I did not
know. I would like to see more programs like this and more youth getting
involved in these programs. -Jim Attwood, cattle and poultry producer
Programs like the Grasslands Evaluation contest and Reel Into Sportfishing
program teach youth topics that expose them to real world situations. These
programs also help me to continue learning right along with the youth.
