Extension Programs Seek to Strengthen Families
One of the goals of Extension is to strengthen Arkansas families. By
providing educational programs which focus on positive social behavior for
our children, we can impact their character and social competence. We also
provide educational opportunities for parents and other child care providers
to encourage a safe, nurturing environment for children of our county.
-Diane Clement, County Extension Agent
The Best Care, approved by the Division of Child Care and Early
Childhood Education, is a free training program which Extension offers to child
care providers. In 2001, ten hours of training provided research based
information on such topics as Nutrition, Building a Relationship, Working with
Special Needs Children, Attention Deficit Disorder, and Communicating with
Parents. In addition to the lectures, sessions include hands-on activities and
group interaction.
In an effort to promote positive social behavior in our children, two school
enrichment programs were offered. Groark, Violence Prevention contains
five lessons based around a friendly dinosaur named Groark. The lessons include
Learning to Control Anger, Learning to Work Out Conflicts, Learning to Listen,
Learning to Deal with Bullying, and Learning About Prejudice. Character
Critters is a character education program based on the six key elements of
character development: responsibility, caring, trustworthiness, fairness,
citizenship, and respect. Children learn these character elements from Roy the
Responsible Rabbit, Fran the Fair Frog, Carrie the Caring Cat, Cindy the Citizen
Crab, Tommy the Trustworthy Turtle, and Rusty the Respectful Raccoon.

Children at Kingsland Elementary learn from "Character Critters"
taught by County Extension Agent, Diane Clement.
