About Us

|
| County agent Ron Baker and rice producer Michael Ahrent examine the crop at mid season. |
Throughout the 2006 crop year, three Clay County farming
enterprises (Mathis Farms, Martin Ahrent and Sons, and Randal
Coleman) worked very closely with the Extension service in the rice
multiplier program. They followed Extension’s rice-management
recommendations in each step of production for each field in the
program. They put together fertilization and pesticide programs
according to each field’s situation, made timely applications, and
managed the flood water effectively. The result was a clean,
high-yielding crop that exceeded expectations. Yet, production costs
were significantly lower than the state average cost of production.
The rice multiplier program is an effective way to demonstrate how U
of A agricultural research makes a real difference for real people.
Rice farmers, consultants, and others involved in Clay County’s rice
production depend heavily upon information they receive through the
Extension service. In addition to demonstrations, this information
is provided through a variety of other means, including newsletters,
news articles, production manuals, fact sheets, production meetings,
field tours, farm visits, phone calls, diagnostic labs, and
assistance from some of the industry’s most renowned specialists.
Impacts
Over 300 producers and others involved in Clay County rice production have adapted many, if not all, of the technologies demonstrated in the rice multiplier program. This fact has helped Clay County become one of Arkansas’s more successful rice-producing counties.
